A Steinway artist, Dr. Jonathan Edward Mann enjoys a dynamic performing and teaching career that has taken him across the United States and Europe. The 2010-11 season includes Dr. Mann's debuts at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, the Dame Myra Hess series in Chicago, and a concerto appearance with the Amherst Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Mann received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance under Dr. Karen Shaw from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was associate instructor and faculty member of the Young Pianist's Program. He earned his doctorate in piano performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he served as teaching assistant to James Tocco and faculty member of the College-Conservatory's Preparatory Department. Dr. Mann's penetrating interpretations have received high praise from critics. Recent recital venues include New York City, Vancouver, Seattle, Bellingham, WA, Portland, Los Angeles, Rochester, NY, San Francisco, Boise, Spokane, Louisville, Jacksonville, FL, and Greensboro, NC. Dr. Mann is also in demand as a collaborator, having performed with New York Philharmonic clarinetist Mark Nuccio and composer Joan Tower. Orchestral engagements include the Brevard Orchestra, Indiana University Symphony Orchestra, North Manchester Symphony, and Fort Wayne Philharmonic, where his performance of Franz Liszt's Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major was hailed as "dashing, elegant, and mercurial." He has served on the faculty of the Brevard Music Center, coaching vocalists and performing scenes from such operas as The Magic Flute and La Bohème. Currently he serves on the faculty of Opera Lytes, a theatre company in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Mann has given master classes at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Chautauqua Institute, University of Washington, Oregon State University, Boise State University, Western Washington University, Indiana University, Central Washington University, Whitworth University, University of Louisville, and the University of North Florida. A highly sought-after clinician, Dr. Mann's presentations have included the New York State School Music Association, Washington State Music Teachers Association, Idaho State Music Teachers Association, the College Music Society National Conference, Sherman Clay Steinway Seattle and Spokane, Indiana Music Teachers Association, the American Liszt Society, and the Buffalo Music Teachers Association, of which he is the chair. Dr. Mann is Assistant Professor of Piano at SUNY Fredonia where he teaches applied piano and chamber music. In 2011 he will record a solo disc of piano preludes for Albany Records. Forthcoming articles include "Preluding With the Masters," examining the improvisations of Josef Hofmann, Wilhelm Backhaus, and Dinu Lippati, to be published in Clavier Companion. Prior to his position at SUNY Fredonia, Mann was a faculty member at the University of Idaho's Lionel Hampton School of Music. |
